Wednesday, 6 June 2009 - Monmouthshire Beacon

In the Wyevern League Monmouth lost their third match in a row last week to a strong Ross-On-Wye team>

While winning two out of four rinks they went down in the remaining two.  They now find themselves at the bottom of the ladder with the possibility of gaining honours all but gone at this early stage of the season.
The Monmouth Ladies however, are riding high after winning two out of three of their matches and are getting stronger. Monmouth Bowls Club have a small ladies section but their keeness and hard work put many of the men to shame.

Brenda Handcock in her first season, has shown immense potential as a lead. Stalwarts Pat Hawkins and Diann Darknell provide the experience at the back end at 3 and 4, while Captain Wendy Evans is a keen and bubbly No.2.  Wendy although short on experience won the Ladies championship in 2007 in her first full year, Val Jones is another hard worker for the club, joining Wendy and Diann on the committee and waiting in the wings to show her prowess on the green. It is a shame that not all bowling clubs value their Ladies section as much as Monmouth does.

As usual the call for more keen ladies is ever present, so what about it girls?

On Monday 18th May Monmouth was at home to the royal Forest of Dean Club in the CMA triples league although although their performance in the Wyevern League remains poor they found the team bolstered by the ladies and consequently won four out of the five rinks to keep them on course to defend their hard won champions title from last year, with 2 wins out of 2.

In the round robin tournament of the WBA Caruthers Sheild, Monmouth had no chance of finishing first.  But with the sun on their backs and pride in their team the 3rd division men travelled to the 2nd division side Croesyceiliog in the final match on Saturday.  At all times there were never more than 7 or 8 shots separating the teams.

In the final stages the lead changed hands several times. First to finish was Clive Hawkins rink winning 22 to 19 shots. Jeff Parker and Bob Hebron's rinks fought hard against keen opposition to keep their losing scores down to 5 shots each. Over on rink 5 Dave Jemmet, Terry Davies, John Muschamp and John Buffin put on a fine display to run out winning by 14 shots and see Monmouth home by 7 shots a fine all round team performance!

It has to be said the team spirit is high despite the departure of some experienced bowlers from last year.  Those occasionals who have now found themselves regulars in the side have have not been wanting.

Monmouth Bowls club opened up its defence of their Coal Merchants League crown on Monday, 11th May.
Having won the league last year the club was keen to get off to a winning start against visitors Cinderford. Last year Cinderford lost by 6 shots at Monmouth so the Monmouth members new it would be a hard fought game.
The game remained close to the very end with Monmouth winning 4 out of the 5 rinks but only winning by 6 shots, the same margin as last year.

Monmouth Bowls Club played host to Caldicot in their opening East Monmouthshire League match.
Two years ago after winning all of their previous games Monmouth lost to Caldicot in the final EMBA match of the season which denied Monmouth the league winner’s trophy. Indeed, you would need to be a long serving club member to remember the last time Monmouth beat Caldicot.

April 2009

The members of Monmouth Bowls Club are looking forward to the challenges of the new season.  As the season starts this week a hefty 48 fixture season awaits those who want to play competitive bowls.
In the Monmouthshire League, the club narrowly avoided relegation last year after gaining promotion for two consecutive years.  However the club managed to win the Coal Merchants Association league trophy on their first attempt last year.  The CMA league is played with five rinks of three players instead of the usual four.  The club also runs a number of internal competitions.
The groundsman has done a fine job in the close season as the bowling green looks in excellent condition.
The club also supports a bowls tour,  the tour this year is to south Devon  starting Monday 31st of August for 5 days.
The committee and members extend a warm welcome to anybody who wants join.  If you anybody you know is interested please contact the Club Secretary on 01291 690726 or  Contact Us Via Email
